You use your ears to determine extent of adjustment in pitch necessary. To correct & lower the pitch to tune, roll a finger & slightly allow air to escape a hole. When your instrument is playing in the upper register, it tends to play sharp.
Remember, your finger pads are used to cover the holes. Intermediate players: Follow procedure above if you have never played on an open hole flute. The pads of the fingers serve to "close" the open hole.
